MIGUEL ALVAREZ ACOSTA

Was born on September 29, 1907 in San Luis Potosí. He grew up in an austere environment, with many economic needs, which prompted him to work from a very young age.
After studying at the Normal School for teaching, where he practiced that profession in Xilitla. He held various public positions in his native San Luis Potosí, such as president of the Superior Court of Justice, until he was named Interim Governor.

In Mexico City, he was Undersecretary of Broadcasting, Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts in 1954.

Founder of the OPIC (Organismo de Promoción Internacional de Cultura) Organization for  International Promotion of Culture,  among other positions, when Mexican art had an international boom with new figures such as Diego Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros and Frida Kahlo.

Miguel Álvarez Acosta arrived at the «Palacio Nacional De Bellas Artes»  as General Director in 1954 after the dismissal of the then director Andrés Iduarte Foucher, when a flag of the communist party was placed over Frida Kahlo’s coffin at her public funeral.

This fact generated a lot of controversy, forcing Iduarte Foucher to present his resignation.

Miguel Álvarez Acosta was appointed new Director of the National Institute of Fine Arts by order of President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines.

His literary work drew the attention of numerous artists and film directors such as Luis Buñuel who adapted his book «Muro Blanco en Roca Negra» (which received the National Novel Prize), to make the film «El Río y la Muerte».

He won several literary awards and recognitions such as the Mexico City Prize in 1948 for his work Xilitla, the Buenos Aires International Prize in 1950, and his work «Muro Blanco en Roca Negra», awarded by the newspaper El Nacional in 1951.
